Our first Soul Strong Yoga summer is coming to a close, but we’re bustin’ into fall with a full line-up of events on our calendar. Fall is the time to get out of your comfort zone. Those back-to-school vibes, no matter what your age, still permeate the air, inspiring many to try on new versions of themselves with their fall clothes. How are we inspiring & vibing this fall? With Cupcakes & Buti Yoga taught by the incredible Teri Williams!! This is a 75 minute Buti Yoga practice with red velvet cupcakes afterwards! We are stoked to bring this workshop to y’all on Friday, September 21st from 7-8:30PM. To get you up to date on this fantastic form of movement, I did a little interview with Teri to get the scoop.
Check it out below!
First, let’s get the basics. I asked Teri, what exactly is Buti Yoga?
Teri: Buti yoga is a soulful blend of power yoga, cardio intensive tribal dance, conditioning and deep abdominal toning that was created in 2010 by Bizzie Gold, a trainer and wellness expert. It’s a way to connect to a part of you that you didn’t know existed. It changes you, it challenges you, it takes you really take a look at yourself, and when you’re done….you come out feeling powerful. The movements in Buti yoga are typically paired to upbeat hip-hop, making you want to dance. Have you ever heard a song and it just sparks something in you that you can’t explain? Well put that feeling in with yoga moves that make you feel powerful, and you have a recipe for complete feminine empowerment.
Wow. And how exactly did you get into Buti Yoga? Where’d you hear of it?
Teri: I learned about Buti in the fall of 2017 while I was googling power yoga. Being a personal trainer I wanted to combine yoga with exercise and I came across a Youtube video for Buti yoga. I remember copying the clip and sending it to a friend asking if she’d ever heard of this. The teachers and students were dressed in sports bras and Buti shorts dancing around and putting movement with the yoga poses. I shook it off. But you’ve got to love Facebook algorithms. That one search and Buti yoga started popping up everywhere! Facebook ads, Instagram ads (...) So I went to the website and checked to see if there would be any trainings coming up in the area, and there was (…) Buti yoga drew me in...I wanted to be able to teach it so that I could inspire others, and by others I mean African-Americans in my community to practice yoga, not only African Americans, but people in general. The ones who may think yoga is boring.
But then, I had to ask...for those of us that are scared to get in a room and dance. Any advice?
Teri: The most confident and sexy a person feels is when their out on the dance floor letting it all hang out and going with the flow!
However, if that doesn’t sell you, three words will: Red. Velvet. Cupcakes. You know it. Come and get it this September to shake your Buti!!
